The Ayatul Kursi Challenge · All four lessons

Four lessons. One ayah. Start today.

Here is the whole challenge in one place, so you do not have to wait a day between lessons. Here is the whole challenge with Qari Uzair, in order. Watch one, recite out loud, then watch the next. By the fourth you will have recited the greatest ayah in the Quran from beginning to end, and you will hear the difference in your own voice.

Lesson 1

Read it, all the way through.

Why the Prophet, peace be upon him, called this the greatest ayah in the Quran. Then the ayah itself, phrase by phrase, slowly. He recites, pauses, you repeat. The phrases join into halves, and the halves into one full pass together.

Do this: watch it once through and just listen. Then watch again and repeat every phrase out loud.

Ten minutes. Watch it somewhere you can recite out loud.

Lesson 2

The letters English doesn’t have.

Some sounds in the Quran do not exist in English. The ha in al-Hayy. The ayn in al-Aliyy. The qaf in al-Qayyum. Qari Uzair takes a handful of them, using only words from the ayah, and shows you how to shape each one. Hear it, say the word, then say the phrase around it.

Do this: pick the letter that felt hardest and say its word five times, slowly, the way he showed you.

Under ten minutes. Have the first lesson done before you start this one.

Lesson 3

The stretches.

Ever recited an ayah and felt it was rushed, or dragged, without knowing why? This is usually the reason. Here you learn where the long vowels fall in Ayatul Kursi and how long to hold each one. Holding a stretch is like holding a note: too short, too long, just right.

Do this: recite the first half of the ayah once with him, then once on your own, listening for every stretch.

About ten minutes. Recite the first half with him at the end.

Lesson 4

The hum, and the whole ayah.

The soft nasal sound in recitation, like the middle of the word sing, and where it lives in this ayah. Then the part everything has been building to: the full ayah, together, twice. Once following him. Once with him silent, listening to you.

Do this: recite the whole ayah on your own, beginning to end, slowly. That is what four lessons sound like.

Just over ten minutes. This is the one where you recite the whole ayah.
